What is a Biomechanical Assessment?
A biomechanical assessment is a detailed examination of the way your feet, legs, and body move—both at rest and in motion. It allows your podiatrist to identify any abnormal movement patterns, postural imbalances, or joint dysfunctions that may be contributing to pain, poor performance, or recurring injuries.
It’s often the missing link in diagnosing the root cause of many foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back issues.
Why Would I Need One?
-
You may benefit from a biomechanical assessment if you experience:
-
Foot, heel, arch or ankle pain
-
Knee, hip or lower back discomfort
-
Ongoing or recurring injuries (e.g. shin splints, tendonitis)
-
Tired, aching legs after work or sport
-
Uneven shoe wear or posture concerns
-
Flat feet, high arches, or rolling ankles
-
Issues with balance or alignment
-
Poor performance or discomfort during activity
Even if you’re not in pain, understanding your biomechanics can help prevent injury and optimise movement efficiency—especially if you’re active or on your feet all day.
What’s Involved?
During your assessment, your podiatrist will examine how your body moves from the ground up:
What We Look At:
-
Foot posture & structure (standing and walking)
-
Gait analysis – the way you walk or run
-
Joint range of motion – hips, knees, ankles, and feet
-
Muscle strength and flexibility
-
Leg length assessment
-
Weight-bearing alignment and load distribution
-
Footwear assessment – what your current shoes are doing for (or against) you
-
3D foot scans or pressure mapping (if required for orthotics)
What Happens After?
Once we’ve identified the root cause, your podiatrist will create a tailored treatment plan to reduce pain, improve function, and support your long-term foot health.
Treatment May Include:
Custom or prefabricated orthotics
To support foot posture, redistribute pressure, and improve alignment
Stretching & strengthening exercises
Targeted to correct muscular imbalances and improve joint motion
Footwear advice
Help choosing shoes that match your foot type and lifestyle needs
Activity modifications or load management
Especially if pain is related to work, training, or standing for long hours
Taping or bracing
To support and protect vulnerable joints or tendons short term
Referral to other professionals
Physiotherapists, sports doctors, or GPs where appropriate
